About Us

St Mary’s is a sacred home for all people seeking a deeper life with God through the beauty of the ancient Orthodox Christian faith.

We are an Orthodox Church located in Pymble, in Sydney’s North – a vibrant and growing community where people of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life are welcomed with warmth and love.

Rooted in the unbroken tradition handed down from Christ through the Apostles and St Mark the Evangelist, we strive to live out our faith with authenticity, reverence, and joy. At St Mary’s, worship is timeless, centred around the Divine Liturgy and the sacramental life of the Church, drawing us into a living encounter with Jesus Christ – with all services prayed entirely in English.

We are committed to raising strong families, forming hearts and minds through teaching and discipleship, and reaching out in service to the wider community with hope, compassion, and grace.

Whether you’re new to the Orthodox faith or simply exploring, you are welcome here – to grow, to belong, and to encounter Christ in His fullness.

Who is St Mary of Egypt?

Our church is named for St Mary of Egypt, also known as St Mary the Repentant.

Born in Egypt in the 4th century, she left home as a teenager and lived a life of indulgence in Alexandria. Years later, she travelled to Jerusalem and tried to enter the Church of the Resurrection. A mysterious force stopped her at the door. In that moment of grace, she recognised her sinfulness and cried out to the Theotokos (St Mary, the Mother of God) in prayer.

After finally being allowed in, she heard a voice say, “If you cross the Jordan River, you will find rest and salvation.” She obeyed, leaving behind the world and crossing into the desert, where she lived alone for decades in deep repentance.

Her story comes to us from a monk named Zosimas, who encountered her in the wilderness during the Great Fast. At first, she avoided him. When he caught up to her, he found a woman clothed only in rags, with wild hair and a radiant spirit. Though she appeared rough in appearance, he was struck by the holiness that filled her.

St Mary asked Zosimas to return a year later to give her Holy Communion, which he did. The following year, he returned again and found she had passed away, with a note written in the sand asking him to bury her.

St Mary’s story is one of radical repentance, fierce struggle, and deep grace. Though she lived alone, her longing was to be united with Christ and His Church. We commemorate her on April 14 in the Coptic calendar.

A Mission of Hope and Healing

Inspired by Christ’s command to go to all nations, we share the good news of salvation with humility and grace, bringing hope, healing, and light to our communities.

Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this," Says the Lord of hosts, "If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.
